About me

Hi! I am Laurie Schammel, a recently retired mother of 3 grown children. I vow to provide a safe place and will promote a respectful community for your children to learn and grow!

Why am I qualified?

My husband and I are a ‘Big Couple’ through Big Brothers/Big Sisters and have a 12 year old little brother we’ve had for over 3 years. We passed the intensive vetting process and background checks to be qualified for that amazing program. It has truly enriched our lives!

I taught Art grades 1-6 at a private school for 7 years.
I piloted their Pre-K program and taught as the Pre-K4 teacher for 5 years.

I majored in art at UW Stevens Point and have taken additional art classes at UW Whitewater and Madison College. Classes included painting, drawing, ceramics, jewelry, textiles and graphic design.

Please email me HERE if you have questions or would like to visit Schwetzel Woods. I’d love to show you around our place.

Testimonials

It has been my pleasure to support Laurie and her husband in their match with their Little Brother through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County program since 2015. Having personally worked with hundreds of matches, I can honestly say that Laurie is a top-of-the-line mentor and advocate for kids. Her ability to meet her Little Brother where he is and provide a safe and nurturing environment to ignite his potential is a gift to our community.

My three daughters aged seven, six and three absolutely love spending time with Laurie in her wooded wonderland. They have spent numerous hours exploring the woods, learning about chickens (did you know they eat blueberries), creating stories from painted rocks, making unique bookmarks and much more. Laurie accompanies children in their imagination as she follows them into their curiousity. There is something about the way she engages them that draws them back again and again to her home. Each and every time I drive away I hear the words, oh, so soon? When can we go back again?
